Lunula

The lunula, from the Latin meaning “little moon”, was a crescent-shaped amulet commonly worn by Roman women and girls. The form derives from a much older lunar symbol associated across the ancient world with the cycles of the moon, fertility, and regeneration. Lunulae appear in archaeological contexts throughout the Roman period and belong to one of the longest continuously used motifs in the history of jewellery.
