The knot motif used in this ring is among the most recognisable decorative elements in Hellenistic jewellery, although its origins reach back to much earlier traditions.

Initially, it functioned as a sign of alliance formed between warriors. Over time, protective qualities were attributed to it, and it came to be regarded as an amulet endowed with particular power.

In the Hellenistic period, it was also invested with religious significance, associated with the mysteries and with the symbolism of birth, death, and fertility.

Regardless of these historical contexts, the knot motif may be read in a more universal sense—as a sign of a bond entered into and a lasting connection. Within jewellery, this meaning acquires particular clarity, referring directly to the relationship between two people, intimacy and unity.
