The flower is one of those universal symbols used across cultures to speak about the process of becoming. It grows from what is hidden and invisible, and reaches fulfilment in the moment of bloom. In this sense, it stands for maturation, the unfolding of hidden potential, and the gradual revealing of aspects of human experience that are not accessible earlier in life. A particularly strong expression of this idea is the alchemical “Golden Flower”, known, among other sources, from The Secret of the Golden Flower, a Taoist treatise devoted to inner transformation practices. It does not describe a physical object, but a state of mind achieved through concentration, discipline, and the integration of scattered aspects of the self. As in Carl Gustav Jung’s interpretation of alchemy, where the transmutation of metals serves as a symbolic image of the process of individuation, and gold traditionally represents the most perfect and incorruptible of metals, the Golden Flower remains a figure of spiritual maturation, understood as a gradual movement towards inner coherence.
